The f8f11 crew gathered downtown at Vibiana this week for “Stepping Up in the City,” the largest annual membership event for Step Up Women’s Network. Amy shot the event, I worked the crowd, and our favorite makeup mistress, Jill, manned the membership table. Over 450 women came to mix, mingle, and honor just a few of the individuals who have gone above and beyond for the philanthropic woman’s group. Ali Brown, Fresh Events Company, Jenn Harrison, Ashley Jones, Jill Michnick, Lia Saeteurn, Diane Reichenberger all received the Commitment to Philanthropy Award for 2010 for raising a combine $70,000 For Step Up Programs!
Step Up is an organization very near and dear to f8f11 Images. Amy has been a member for over four years and in the Fall of 2006 she crafted one of Step Up’s most successful and popular teen programs, “I Dream To . . .”

The after-school program teaches teen girls basic camera skills, and uses photojournalism as a medium for exploring their own dreams, as well as the world around them. The program was such a hit that Step Up adopted the program nation-wide. A camera is a powerful tool for exploration and communication and the “I Dream to . . .” project allowed the girls to explore their thoughts and goals and to get close to a few of the women who will help them achieve those goals. I asked Amy how she came to start the project, she replied ” I was volunteering with other photography charities but I loved what Step Up was doing with the teen girls. When the opportunity to start this new photography program came around, I acted on it. It allowed me to combine two things I am passionate about.” One of Amy’s former students, Isidra “Lulu” Favela, gave an impassioned and inspiring speech about the hope, direction and confidence that Step Up programs have given to her.

“Stepping Up in the City” was not only a fun night out – it was the event where I met Amy and where I first joined Step Up! It was so rewarding to see how far I, and all the ladies of Step Up, have come since then. I thought back to that first event and being so nervous to actually ask a professional photographer for a chance. From intern to employee, working with f8f11Images has been such a rewarding and fulfilling experience. From that first Step Up event, I could never have imagined what was in store for me. I renewed my membership at Stepping Up in the City and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead! See the entire gallery of pictures, here! Stay Inspired, LA – Amanda Jude Abraham
