New Work – Vans Shoe Designer – SanDisk Feature Story

Have loved #Vans since I was 13.  Still do! …which made for a great evening when I photographed Vans shoe designer Lindsay White Funk at her favorite running trail (Veteran’s Park, Manhattan Beach).  @SanDisk posted a feature story at this link which includes text of the process of the shoot.  Thank you Lindsay for a fantastic night running & photographing!  http://stories.sandisk.com/content/step-trendsetterImage

My LA with Vans shoe designer Lindsay White Funk

Last night continued my “My LA” series photographing Vans shoe designer Lindsay White Funk in her favorite SoCal location: Veteran’s Parkway running trail. She was game for anything! I told her she probably wanted to be careful with that statement as I might ask her to jump out of a plane with me.

Premiering Tonight – Daniel Musto on NBC’s Fashion Star

Hi everybody !   Tonight NBC’s show Fashion Star is premiering 9:30-11pm EST.   I photographed Daniel Musto (the show’s on-camera wardrobe stylist) just the other month for my “My LA” photo series.   He was great fun and I look forward to seeing him appear on the show!   The host of the show is legendary model Elle Macpherson, with judges: designer John Varvatos (whose LA store I photographed in earlier this month), Jessica Simpson, and Nicole Richie.  Take a look at Daniel here in one of his favorite LA spots:  Barneys and be sure to watch him tonight + upcoming Tuesday nights on NBC Fashion Star!

Step Up Women’s Network Event at Diane Von Furstenberg Los Angeles

February 9, 2012

Step Up Women’s Network was at it again, getting together a roomful of talented, professional women to network, shop and help raise funds for the at-risk teen girls that need and grow from their help and support.   This time the event was held at the Diane Von Furstenberg store on Melrose in LA.   I was happy to photograph all the dynamic women and girls yet again, and especially for DVF who has helped so many women make an impact!  DVF gave a very generous $5000 donation to Step Up!   And 20% off all sales to the lucky ladies who attended.  #suwn @suwn @DVFLosAngeles @DVF

Luv 4 Anouka – Spring/Summer 2012 Women’s Fashion

I was happy when Luv 4 Anouka’s designer Melissa (Missy) Renkosik requested I shoot their Spring/Summer 2012 line.   Luv 4 Anouka is a flirty, fun, casual young women’s line; it fits right in with my California asthetic …  and Missy wanted to shoot outside (I really love shooting outdoors on location)!   One thing though:  it was Fall and we were going to have to make it look like Spring.   The scout happened back in October and we planned the shoot for November.  Missy gave me a few ideas of locations she liked and I went to those locations to lock in some lighting scenarios and storyboard ideas.   Here are our favorite images … none of which could have been possible without the designer: Missy Renkosik, our model: Megan Garber, 2nd wardrobe stylist: Michelle Sackson, Retoucher: Jennifer Wickenkamp … oh, and a rake I made sure was on set that day to rake away as many brown, fallen autumn leaves as possible to make our retoucher’s job a little easier.

BC Footwear Fall Cali Cool 2011 Images

Oh yeah!  Time to share the images + video I shot for BC Footwear’s Fall 2011 Campaign (http://www.bcfootwear.net).   BC Footwear, sister company of Seychelles (http://www.seychellesfootwear.com) has that California cool vibe I treasure.  Modern style with a vintage kick-back chic.

Big thanks to BC’s Art Director Jess Gary who gushed, “eeeeeeeeee.  These pictures are blowing my mind!”.   She + I worked together to bring a look that is current and also speaks to BC’s vintage influences.  I created my own Adobe Photoshop filters to make our images take on that Holga film flair so I could still shoot digital (the Olympus EPL1 for the stills, the Canon 7D for the video), fast (on SanDisk Extreme Pro cards www.sandisk.com), and get the look we wanted.

Marketing Director Elaine Pow made the shoot day an absolute treat ! ; not to mention the models (Carre Callaway, Charlotte Toates, Marie DeSauvage and Alexandra Feldman) who brought great energy.   Thank you ladies !  I had a great time !

Directives West FIRST LA Fall/Winter 2011 Collections Show

I wanted to make sure I made it down to Directives West FIRST LA show at the California Market Center last night, and I am certainly glad I did!   It was standing room only in an outdoor patio area on the first day following Spring Foward, very appropriate for an LA Show!

They chose stylist bloggers (Laurie Brucker (http://www.lauriebstyle.com), Erin Weinger of Style Section LA, and Hellin Kay) + designers (Dolan, Whitney Eve, Twinkle by Wenlan, Kolae, James Icon, YuYu, Hazel) with their fingers + hearts on the pulse of West Coast cool.  Links to designers below.

This is what I saw (as a slideshow):

Trina Turk – in support of Step Up Women’s Network

Fashion Designer Trina Turk

Hi everybody !  You already know how much Amy loves Step Up Women’s Network (www.suwn.com) – so she was happy to meet Trina Turk (www.trinaturk.com), the very vibrant  and dedicated fashion designer who was giving her time this morning to talk to other Step Up members about her business experiences, and to support the organization by giving back via a percentage of the sales made.  Thank you Trina !

No more goosebumps – Retouching Tip in Photoshop

You know when your model has goosebumps – and you need to get rid of them, fast ?

Here’s a helpful tip:  use the Smudge Tool to keep the natural shading/highlighting of your model’s skin.

Here’s how to do it:

1)  Choose the Smudge Tool in your tool box (it resides with the Blur Tool) but looks like an index finger pushing down

2) Choose the Round Fan Stiff Thin Bristles brush – why ?  because my theory is that it smooths your model’s skin around similar to the way

skin really looks, ie. cross-hatched.  Take a close look at your own skin to see what I mean.

3) Choose a size relative to the area you are going to work on

4) note:  the Smudge Tool doesn’t allow you to choose a hardness factor so …

5) Choose a strength: Start low at 10%.  Stroke up and down and mix around.  Play with it to see how much strength you need.

6) Oh my god you just made your model look as if she wasn’t shivering on that beach you shot on in the middle of December in Northern Cal.

Goosebumps be gone

Oh uh goosebumps
