In Celebration of International Women’s Day

In celebration of International Women’s Day I am posting a slideshow of the mentor/mentee portraits I took of an amazing group of women and girls who learn from each other via Step Up Women’s Network (suwn.org).  I have been fortunate to be involved with the organization since 2006; they truly are helping young girls become the women they dream to be.

New Work – Vans Shoe Designer – SanDisk Feature Story

Have loved #Vans since I was 13.  Still do! …which made for a great evening when I photographed Vans shoe designer Lindsay White Funk at her favorite running trail (Veteran’s Park, Manhattan Beach).  @SanDisk posted a feature story at this link which includes text of the process of the shoot.  Thank you Lindsay for a fantastic night running & photographing!  http://stories.sandisk.com/content/step-trendsetterImage

Pro Skateboarder Samarria Brevard

5/7/2012

Oh yeah!  Pro skateboarder Samarria Brevard @Samarria Brevard (recently signed to @hooplaskate boards and 18 years old as of this writing)  agreed to be a part of my My LA portrait series.  She really jams!  And so much more so because she was the ONLY GIRL skating the park last Friday where there were over 50 guys.  The ONLY girl.  I approached her for my project after I caught her win at the Supergirl Am Jam competition in Venice last summer.   There was no way I could do a tribute to LA without including a skateboarder, and given my impassioned work publicizing great women and girls it had to be a girl.   She said yes, and  met me out at her favorite LA park, Stoner Skate Park on Stoner Ave in West LA.    Here’s an outtake image from our shoot : the final selected image will be displayed alongside the other subjects of the project.  Thank you Samarria for coming out and adding great energy to the project!

Step Up Women’s Network Event at Diane Von Furstenberg Los Angeles

February 9, 2012

Step Up Women’s Network was at it again, getting together a roomful of talented, professional women to network, shop and help raise funds for the at-risk teen girls that need and grow from their help and support.   This time the event was held at the Diane Von Furstenberg store on Melrose in LA.   I was happy to photograph all the dynamic women and girls yet again, and especially for DVF who has helped so many women make an impact!  DVF gave a very generous $5000 donation to Step Up!   And 20% off all sales to the lucky ladies who attended.  #suwn @suwn @DVFLosAngeles @DVF

SuperGirl Jam 2011 – Snowboard + Skateboard on Venice Beach, CA

Yesterday I spent the afternoon on Venice Beach, CA documenting the AMAZING skateboard and snowboard contenders in the SuperGirl Jam 2011.   Yes I said snowboard, too!  Actual snow was created right down on the beach – and the skateboarders created some true inspiration for all the other girls (and guys !) in the crowd.   I met skater Samarria Brevard who won the supergirl cape in the AM jam and skaters Lacey Baker and Brooke Whipp who brought ten-fold of talent.  Here are some key images …

BC Footwear Fall Cali Cool 2011 Images

Oh yeah!  Time to share the images + video I shot for BC Footwear’s Fall 2011 Campaign (http://www.bcfootwear.net).   BC Footwear, sister company of Seychelles (http://www.seychellesfootwear.com) has that California cool vibe I treasure.  Modern style with a vintage kick-back chic.

Big thanks to BC’s Art Director Jess Gary who gushed, “eeeeeeeeee.  These pictures are blowing my mind!”.   She + I worked together to bring a look that is current and also speaks to BC’s vintage influences.  I created my own Adobe Photoshop filters to make our images take on that Holga film flair so I could still shoot digital (the Olympus EPL1 for the stills, the Canon 7D for the video), fast (on SanDisk Extreme Pro cards www.sandisk.com), and get the look we wanted.

Marketing Director Elaine Pow made the shoot day an absolute treat ! ; not to mention the models (Carre Callaway, Charlotte Toates, Marie DeSauvage and Alexandra Feldman) who brought great energy.   Thank you ladies !  I had a great time !

A Sign – Follow Your Heart to Step Up

Some people say pay attention to the signs that pop up, unexpectedly, in your life.  Reflecting on them &/or implementing them in your life will likely give you all the clarity you need to know you are right where you should be, doing just what you should be doing.

And so it was yesterday when one of the girls in Step Up Women’s Network Photojournalism for Girls program (Vanessa) pulled a candy heart from the Sweethearts bag of candies that I bought at the Rite Aid, and yelped “It says Step Up on it !”.   All the girls gathered ’round.

Vanessa's Step Up Heart

I brought the candies so they could be used as props for the girls’ photo project that day … but little did I know that they could be so specifically inspiring !   Step Up is close to the girls hearts for many reasons, and I hope yesterday was yet another wonderful reminder of why.   It certainly was for me.  Step Up Women’s Network has been supporting the at-risk teen girl photo program I helped them craft for 5 years now, and I continue to be so grateful.  Look out for the girls gallery show upcoming in April 2011 !
